Carolyn Melenani Kuali`i ancestry comes from the Kuali`i line of the island of `Oahu and the Mescalero Apache of Southeastern New Mexico. At birth she was given to her maternal grandmother Kaena Kuali`i in the Hawaiian tradition of hanai (adoption) and had the great fortune of being raised by her grandmother.

For the past twenty plus years, Carolyn has worked with Native Hawaiian, American Indian and Alaska Native communities providing consultation in culture preservation programs, facilitation of cultural exchange and protocol activities, and art & cultural programs. In 2006, she co-founded Kua`aina Associates - an arts & cultures organization. For the past ten-years, Carolyn has provided capacity building assistance to community-based organizations, government

and non-government agencies in the areas of organizational development, grants management, and program development focused on behavioral health and HIV/AIDS programs and services. Carolyn currently resides in Berkeley, California and makes frequent trips home to Maui. She is a mother of six adult children who she raised as a single parent and a grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren.
